48. Reported Speech 2

A

It is not always necessary to change the verb in reported speech. If the state of affairs is yet the same, y'all do not need to change the verb to the past. For instance:

direct reported

Paul said 'My new job is boring.'

Paul said that his new job is boring.

(The state of affairs is notwithstanding the same. His job is still boring now.)

direct reported

Helen said 'I want to become to Canada next year.'

Helen told me that she wants to go to Canada next yr.

(Helen still wants to get to Canada next year.)

You can also change the verb to the past:

· Paul said that his new task was boring.

· Helen told me that she wanted to go to Canada side by side yr.

But if the state of affairs has changed or finished, you must apply a by verb:

· Paul left the room suddenly. He said he had to go. (not has to become)

B

You demand to use a past form when there is a difference between what was said and what is actually true.

For case:

You met Sonia a few days ago.

She said: Joe is in infirmary .

Later that day you meet Joe in the street. You say:

Hullo, Joe. I didn't expect to run across you. Sonia said yous were in hospital.

(not 'Sonia said you are in infirmary', because dearly he is non)

C

Say and tell

If y'all say who somebody is talking to, use tell:

· Sonia told me that you were in hospital. (not Sonia said me)

· What did you tell the police? (not say the police)

Otherwise employ say:

· Sonia said that you lot were in hospital. (not Sonia told that ...)

· What did you say?

But yous can 'say something to somebody':

· Ann said cheerio to me and left. (not Ann said me adieu)

· What did yous say to the police?

D

Tell/inquire somebody to do something

We likewise use the infinitive ( to do /to be etc.) in reported speech communication, peculiarly with tell and ask (for orders and requests):

direct reported

'Drinkable plenty of water,' the doctor said to me.

The physician told me to drink enough of water.

direct reported

'Don't be belatedly,' I said to Joe.

I told Joe not to be tardily.

direct reported

'Tin you help me, please,' Jackie said to me.

Jackie asked me to aid her

You tin also say 'Somebody said (not) to do something':

· Paul said not to worry nigh him. (but not Paul said me)
